Episode 140: Rage Bait 64 (ft. John Warren)

It's Christmas of 1996 and you've just unwrapped the hottest new home gaming console, the Nintendo 64. You're about to be immersed into a game more realistic than your brain can even fathom. Except it's not 1996, it's 2024 and games look more like real life than real life does. Wouldn't it be a wild thought experiment to adapt a game made in 2024 to 1996's N64? Wouldn't it?

Fair warning, if you've played a particular game series, Andrew is going to make you furious. Kyle is here to make one 25th of a game. Todd is going to talk a lot about horses. Because none of those things sounded great, we also invited former Fanbyte Head of Media and current cohost of If You’re Driving Close Your Eyes and cofounder of Glydr, John Warren!

FLAVOR TEXT: Bomberman

An artificial life form created to perform menial labor one day becomes sentient and embarks on a journey to free themselves from their oppression. To do so, they must do the impossible: Escape to the surface world and become human. Only then will they be completely free. You may think to yourself: Why are we talking about the plot to 2018's Detroit: Become Human? And our response to you would be, oh no this isn't Quantic Dream's cinematic masterpiece...this is Bomberman, baby!

Episode 62: The Sovereign Nation of Bob-Omb Battlefield

Mario's world might look like it's all hyper-saturated sunshine and rainbows, but under that candy-coated exterior lie some real sinister themes. Like, while that cartoon-y manta ray boss in Super Mario Sunshine might seem like happy fun at first, it's pretty disturbing when you consider that it's literally a shadow that is slowly devouring all living matter in its wake. That gigantic 8-ft walking bomb might have a silly mustache, but it is also a gigantic 8-ft bomb filled entirely of gunpowder and loose ethics. This week, we take a look at the darker side of some of Mario's more enigmatic boss encounters.

SIDEBAR 3: Video Game Creepypastas (Pt. 1)

The idea of creepypastas was a weird mid-00s Internet phenomenon. A product of the message board era, creepypastas are ghost stories posted across a series of forum posts. Naturally, there are a ton of these out there based on video games, so we’re going to share some of our favorites.

WARNING: Some of these stories touch on serious subject matters, such as suicide and child abuse. If you are sensitive to this kind of content, please check out our other episodes.
