Episode 72: A View To A WAAHHH

There comes a time in every video game podcast's life when they are compelled to stop what they are doing and ask "Sure, this game is great. But what's Waluigi up to?" This is that time, and today's episode is the output of that thought experiment.

Consider, dear listener, a sequel to Katamari Damacy starring Waluigi rolling up the Mushroom Kingdom. How about a version of David Cage's Indigo Prophecy where Waluigi is the AI messiah? Or, there's always just straight-up making Waluigi James Bond. I mean, nothing matters anyway, right?

FLAVOR TEXT: One Piece (Pt 1)

Wealth. Fame. Power. The hosts at Debate This!, the King of the Podcasts, had acquired this and everything else the world had to offer. And their dying words drove countless souls to the Debate This! Patreon page: "You want my treasured content? Fine, you can have it. Just pay us $50 a month and we will talk about whatever the hell it is you want! Now you just have to ask it."

Welcome to the ongoing saga of Andrew's journey to catch up on One Piece, a landmark anime series notorious for both its exceptional quality and its 20+ year (and still going) run. In this first episode, we dive deep (haha, get it??) into the East Blue saga, which consists of the first two years of the show's run.

This episode was commissioned by Derek Harper, long-standing member of #butthwompnation and confirmed Better Of The Two Harpers. If you want to commission your own FLAVOR TEXT, check us out on Patreon at patreon.com/debatethiscast!

Episode 71: Use Promo Code "Stygian" at Checkout

Late last night, Matt was pulling a late night at the ol' DT Exclamation Point HQ, and he did that thing in movies where he stepped out of a steamy shower and looked at himself in the mirror and wiped away the fog on the glass to see a SPOOKY THING behind him. Yeah, so our fake office is haunted or whatever...this seems to be as good a time as any to talk in excruciating detail about the Pac-Man ghosts. Welcome to 2021, nerds.

Update and Season 4 Preview

Since all of the Persona soundtracks are now on Spotify, Andrew couldn't be bothered to do an episode today. So instead, Matt recorded a sneak preview of what is in store for 2021 for Debate This! We'll be back next week with a new, equally outrageous episode talking about like Pac-Man's dong or something.

SIDEBAR: Mailbag Episode!

Remember when all your favorite TV sitcoms used to do that thing where instead of actual plot or content they would just play clips from older, better episodes? And then the credits would just roll and it was like, "Yeah whatever see you next week maybe we'll do something then!"

Well, we're doing that but--even better--we've made all of YOU figure out the content for us! That's right friends, today's episode is all about answering YOUR questions. We wax nostalgic on best episode moments, personal favorite games and comics, and most importantly: Which one of us has won DT! the most?

FLAVOR TEXT: Les Misérables

It's a tale as old as time. Boy meets girl. Girl gets rescued from an orphanage by an ex-con who is being mercilessly hunted across the decades by a prison-guard-turned-police-chief. Boy leads an army of school children into battle overthrow the monarchy. Boy and girl fall in love and get married in front of the ghost of her dead adopted father.

Les Misérables is quite possibly one of the most well-known and beloved musicals of all-time! And we're gonna do our best to sully its name with Walugi singing the most famous song and with a bootleg 2D fighting game named "ArmJoe" that is somehow supposed to be based on the original novel.

Check out BitFinity on YouTube for the full version of that glorious Waluigi take on "One Day More," along with other Walugi covers of the likes of "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "For The Longest Time".

This episode was commissioned by Tom Zalatnai, AKA The Fifth Debater! You can find them gushing about food on Up For Discussion or rolling rocks in their Canada-themed D&D podcast Natural Toonie.

Episode 69: Mr. Toad's Uncomfortably Horny Journey

Well, we did it. We made it to the sex number. And what other way is there to celebrate than to make some perfectly wholesome games super horny? Come along with us on this experiment/crime against humanity as we take a class at an anime high school filled with Punch Out! characters, and romance the local fishmonger in a sexy rendition of Marc Davis's Pro Bass Challenge, and do whatever the hell Kyle is having us do in Pokemon: Leather and Lace.

Episode 68: The Sarah Michelle Gellar of Prehistorical Despots

Last month, we asked the question "Which superhero would be a terrible roommate?" So, it stands to reason that it's worth playing in that opposing headspace by asking "Which supervillain would be an awesome roommate?" Imagine just hanging out watching Storage Wars doing bumps of The Power Cosmic with Galactus while your bro Toad cleans the bugs from your shared living space, all the while Apocalypse is channeling you full of otherworldy strength enough to carry 10-ton limestone blocks.

FLAVOR TEXT: League of Legends

You know when you get that big ol' 1,200+ calorie burrito bowl from Chipotle and you see all the different colorful ingredient layers? And then you just mash your plastic fork and slosh everything around and the guac turns the whole thing into a murky greenish-brown protein slurry? And then you ladle on hot sauce overtop like gravy on instant potatoes? That's kind of like the story of League of Legends--it's a burrito bowl chock full of knights and wizards, a generous helping of demons, a sprinkle of pirates, and all topped off with a few dashes of Lovecraftian horror. All these things that we enjoy individually somehow come together in one big goopy mess of fun, fantasy nonsense.

There is A LOT to unpack here, so we're focusing on setting up the setting and the world of Runeterra, which is the center of Riot's rebooted lore back in 2014. We're also highlighting a few choice characters and how each of their backstories connect back to the hub world.
